In spirituality, and equally in life as a whole, a person needs feeling and intellect in equal measure. Without a balance between these two, neither life can be happy nor success enduring.
In the Bhagavad Gita, the Lord gives supreme importance to both intellect and faithful feeling. He says that without shraddhā—faith and inner devotion—no spiritual progress is possible:
“Aśraddhayā hutaṃ dattaṃ tapaḥ taptaṃ kṛtaṃ ca yat, Asad ity ucyate pārtha na ca tat pretya no iha.” (Gita 17.28)
Meaning: Any sacrifice, charity, or austerity performed without faith is called “asat”—vain; it bears no fruit, neither in this life nor in the next.
Yet elsewhere, the Lord declares that in spiritual progress and in liberation from the cycle of birth and death, intellect too holds a vital place:
“Indriyāṇi parāṇy āhur indriyebhyaḥ paraṁ manaḥ, Manas tu parā buddhir yo buddheḥ paratas tu saḥ.” (Gita 3.42)
Meaning: The senses are superior to the body, the mind is superior to the senses, the intellect is superior to the mind, and that which is beyond the intellect is the Self.
Meaning: Thus, knowing the Self as higher than the intellect, and steadying the mind by the intellect, O mighty-armed one, slay the difficult enemy that takes the form of desire.
Because the role of the intellect is not properly understood—or is seldom explained by teachers or Gurus—we find that most seekers, even after decades of practice, attain no tangible spiritual realization. Their effort is not wasted; their sādhanā accumulates merit. Yet without a harmony of faith and intellect, the fruit remains distant.
Take, for instance, the practice of mantra-japa or nāma-japa. Many have repeated sacred names for years, yet few experience genuine realization or inner transformation. This fact, evident to observation, should make us reflect—somewhere an error is being repeated, an error we must recognize and avoid.
When certain teachers merely hand out a guru-mantra and say, “Keep repeating this; everything will happen by itself,” what can the devotee do? Such half-guidance leaves seekers wandering.
But the greatest Teacher—Bhagavān Krishna—never misguides His devotees. He reveals every principle with perfect clarity: how spiritual attainments truly arise, and how devotion to God culminates in divine realization and liberation.
Therefore, those who are earnest seekers should read the Bhagavad Gita daily, and read it with attentive reflection—to grasp what the Lord actually teaches.

People often ask what the difference is between religion and spirituality. It can be understood through the example of an orange. An orange, or narangi as we call it, consists of three parts — first, the peel; second, the pulp; and third, the juice contained within that pulp.
Now consider this: the juice within the pulp is spirituality. It is the essence, the very life-giving element. It nourishes the soul. Yet that juice cannot remain without the pulp to hold it. The pulp itself is religion—that which contains and supports spirituality. The spiritual essence abides within religion.
But religion disintegrates—if there are no practices, rituals, or outward forms to preserve it. Then, along with the pulp, the juice of spirituality too will be lost. Therefore, to keep both religion and the spirituality hidden within it bound together, the peel is also necessary. Though the peel is, in the end, meant to be discarded, its usefulness lasts as long as it protects the essence within.
Hence, one must follow religion, yet one must also assimilate the spirituality concealed within it. Rituals and external forms have a limited, yet essential, place in sustaining the inner spirit.

For attaining God and for advancing in the spiritual path, the purification of the mind is as essential as preparing the soil before sowing seeds. If you sow without tilling the ground, the crop will not be good. Likewise, if your character has not become pure, however much japa (repetition of the Divine Name) you may perform, the result will be meagre.
Therefore, I draw your attention once again to the Bhagavad Gita, especially to verses 13 to 19 of Chapter 12, and verses 1 to 3 of Chapter 16. In the light of these verses, evaluate yourself each day. Try to see whether your mind stands true to the standards set forth there. This cannot happen in a single day; yet even if you do not meet all the standards, it is essential that you meet most of them.
When this happens, every spiritual practice you undertake will soon bear fruits.

Spirituality is a serious subject—indeed, a very serious one. To speak truthfully, life itself is a profoundly serious matter; yet, very few understand its seriousness. Those who realize that one’s rebirth may occur in any form of life, even in the most pitiable condition, and who grasp the misery that the soul may undergo after death—such people truly awaken.
We must think deeply about how to remain happy and contented in this life as well as in the life after death. The Bhagavad Gita is the best guide for such reflection.
Therefore, I wish to remind you once again: those who are genuinely serious about their spiritual welfare must keep three books in their homes. Read them regularly. If your occupation is not exceedingly demanding, make it a habit to study them daily. If you are very busy, then at least read and understand one chapter of the Gita every day, and on weekends, study the Bhagavata Purana and the Ramcharitmanas. Reading the Ramcharitmanas brings great peace to the heart, and the noble character of Lord Rama builds fine spiritual impressions within. The Bhagavata Purana is an ocean of spirituality—it too should be read at least on weekends.
If this discipline is maintained for six months, you will find that your spiritual foundation has begun to form.
You may have often heard saints say that it takes hundreds or thousands of births to attain liberation or God-realization. These hundreds of births are not required to reach God Himself, but to cleanse the inner house of the mind so that God may enter. Once the mind becomes pure, His presence begins to manifest naturally. In the Ramcharitmanas, Lord Rama declares: “The one with a pure mind attains Me; I am not pleased by deceit, trickery, or hypocrisy.”
If you study these three sacred texts regularly, your mind will soon become pure. Those who wish to purify it even faster should practice daily self-evaluation and introspection, preferably at night. If that is not possible, do it at least once every weekend. This reduces the time required for inner purification a hundredfold.
Therefore, keep examining and reviewing yourself regularly. Those among you who are especially eager and restless for spiritual progress may send me a message on the WhatsApp number ending with “15” ( +918865052915) shall make special arrangements for their guidance.
At present, many members of this group have only a general or initial interest in spirituality; therefore, it may not be possible or appropriate to discuss extremely advanced topics here. Such discussions are best suited for developed seekers and earnest lovers of the spiritual path.

Lahiri Mahasaya and the Mystery of Idol Worship | The Kashi Vishwanath Episode
Some people oppose idol worship, yet the Bhagavad Gita and the tradition of saints teach us that there are many paths to reach God.
👉 This truth was beautifully explained by Lahiri Mahasaya through a remarkable incident. A Bengali gentleman, who strongly opposed idol worship, once came to seek initiation. Lahiri Mahasaya directed him first to visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
When he reached the temple, he witnessed an astonishing sight — instead of the Shiva Lingam, he saw Lahiri Mahasaya himself seated there.
🌸 This profound experience revealed to him that opposing idol worship was meaningless. Connection with God arises from inner devotion and feeling — whether through an image or without it.

Question: Gurudev, Hari Sharanam! To what extent is it appropriate to speak a lie for the welfare of others?
Answer (Brahmabodhi):
In Sanātana Dharma, there is an ancient tradition of speaking the truth and honouring truthfulness. Truth has been placed among the highest values of life. Speaking the truth is undoubtedly dharma.
The scriptures declare that those who always speak the truth develop such power in their speech that whatever they utter—be it a blessing or a curse—comes to pass.
Let me give you two examples.
The Episode of King Parīkṣit
You may have heard about how King Parīkṣit met his death. One day he went hunting in the forest and shot an arrow at a deer, but it escaped. While searching for it, he came across the hermitage of Sage Śamīka, who was deep in meditation. Parīkṣit asked him repeatedly, “Have you seen a deer pass by?” but the sage did not respond. Angered, the king noticed a dead snake lying nearby, picked it up, and placed it around the sage’s neck as a mock garland, and then left.
When the sage’s son, Śṛṅgi Ṛṣi, arrived and saw his father thus dishonoured, he was furious. Upon inquiring from the people and learning what had happened, he uttered a curse: “On the seventh day from today, King Parīkṣit will die from the bite of a serpent.”
Sage Śamīka, the father, was a calm and gentle sage. He told his son, “Withdraw your curse; this act of yours will bring great calamity.” But Śṛṅgi replied, “I have never spoken falsehood in my life; therefore, my spoken word cannot become untrue, nor do I have the means to undo it.” Such is the majesty of truth.
And indeed, despite every effort to avert it, King Parīkṣit died on the seventh day by the bite of the serpent Takṣaka.
The Example of Ved Vyāsa and Gāndhārī
Another illustration is from the life of Bhagavān Ved Vyāsa. Once he had blessed Queen Gāndhārī saying, “You shall have one hundred sons.” She conceived, but eventually miscarried, and only a lump of flesh emerged. Distressed, she approached Vyāsa and lamented, “You had blessed me with a hundred sons, yet my pregnancy has ended in failure!”
Vyāsa reassured her, saying, “Devi, I have never spoken falsehood—not even in jest. Therefore, my word cannot become untrue.” Such is the glory of truth. He then instructed her in a method through which, from that mass of flesh, one hundred sons were eventually born.
I narrated these two examples so that one may understand that speaking the truth is a great dharma, and it holds immense power.
Yet, now I must tell you something further. Speaking the truth is indeed a general or ordinary form of dharma. But dharma is of two kinds — Sāmānya Dharma (general duty) and Āpaddharma (duty in times of crisis). In exceptional circumstances, if the intention is pure and noble, even deviating from the usual rule of truth may itself be dharma.
Thus, the Mahābhārata declares:
“Sa eva dharmaḥ sa adharmaḥ deśa-kāle pratiṣṭhitaḥ” — According to time and circumstance, that which is considered dharma may become adharma, and that which seems adharma may become dharma.
Therefore, in special situations—for the protection of someone’s life or for their highest welfare—even speaking untruth can be dharma. However, this principle must not become an excuse for habitual or frequent lying.
Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s Harmony of Truth and Righteous Policy
Just before the Mahābhārata war commenced, Arjuna fell into moral confusion. He said to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, “O Mādhava! How can I find happiness by killing my teachers, elders, and kin? Even if this is a righteous war, is such violence justifiable?”
Śrī Kṛṣṇa explained:
Truth is a noble virtue,
Non-violence is also a revered principle,
But —
If adharma is triumphing,
If the innocent are being destroyed,
If patience and compassion are mistaken for weakness, then remaining silent or inactive becomes the greatest adharma.
In this very context, Krishna instructed Arjuna:
“Sukha-duḥkhe same kṛtvā Lābhālābhau jayājayau। Tato yuddhāya yujyasva Naivaṁ pāpam avāpsyasi॥”(Gītā 2.38)
“Take joy and sorrow, gain and loss, victory and defeat alike — and then engage in your righteous duty. In doing so, no sin will touch you.”
Here, Śrī Kṛṣṇa is not glorifying violence — He is teaching that:
“Truth and non-violence are virtues only so long as they do not aid adharma. And when firm action is required to restrain injustice — that very firmness becomes the highest dharma.”
Conclusion
Truth and non-violence are indeed great virtues.
Yet, their wise application according to circumstance is the true mark of dharma.
If speaking the truth causes unjust harm, silence is better than speech.
If speaking an untruth saves life or prevents grave injustice, that untruth becomes dharma.
And if standing against evil requires firmness, even that becomes righteous warfare — dharma-yuddha.
