I have boarded the plane that will take me from Boston, USA, to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, on my way to Bharat.
I left Bharat on 25 October 2025, beginning a journey that was to take me through parts of Europe, then England, and finally the United States. After completing my engagements in Europe and spending a rewarding stretch of time in England, I arrived in the USA on 5 December.
I had intended to remain there for a longer period. However, I soon realised that from 15 December to 15 January much of the country slips into a near-complete pause. Offices and universities close, academic life recedes, and campuses begin to awaken again only around the third week of January. In effect, the nation enters a collective holiday.
Thus, quite unexpectedly, I found myself in the midst of a forced leisure, with little structured work to pursue. I was informed that before 20 January none of my talks or programmes would materialise in the USA. Waiting for such a long interval seemed unreasonable. I therefore decided to return to India, and to revisit the United States later, with clearer planning and at a more suitable time.
My return to India was also necessitated by the need to ensure that the draft law I had sent to the Prime Minister’s Office, seeking early enactment by Parliament, received due attention. This draft law is an initiative intended to strengthen and empower Hinduism for centuries to come.
Yet, even within this relatively short stay in America—an active engagement of hardly twelve days—my time in the USA proved remarkably productive. In New York and the surrounding areas, I visited several temples and delivered a series of spiritual talks, coordinated by Sri Rahul Sur involving Sri BalaGuru, Sri Vikram and Sri Abhilash Tewari. From there, I travelled to Austin, Texas, for a three-day visit on invitation.
Austin—often spoken of today as the city of Elon Musk—was, for me, significant for a different reason. There, I had the privilege of addressing and guiding the Tattva Academy, run in association with the Chinmaya Mission by a group of devoted Indians, led by Sri Dinesh Rajshekharan and his wife, Tulsi. The academy is dedicated primarily to the children of the Indian diaspora, who grow up between two worlds and often struggle to find a language that binds them to their roots.
In Austin, I also spoke at the Shiva Durga Shakti Temple before a gathering of Indian families, on the theme of Mokshavidya and the paths to liberation. The temple’s priest, Pandit Krishna Pandey, is doing commendable work in drawing youth and families into regular and meaningful participation in temple life—an effort that quietly resists cultural drift without aggression or anxiety.
Another significant moment in Austin was a presentation on the condition of Indians in the United States and the vulnerabilities they face. Delivered by Mr Arun Kumar, who leads an advocacy group there, it was deeply eye-opening.
My stay in New York City was equally fruitful. My friend Sri Rahul Sur, who has been associated with the United Nations for quite long, played an instrumental role in arranging several meetings with leaders of the Indian diaspora, both in person and through virtual conferences. These interactions revealed a community that is outwardly successful, yet inwardly searching—for cohesion, for voice, and for a shared civilisational purpose.
Taken together, it was an unusually intense journey through Europe, England, and the United States. I had planned to include Africa in this itinerary, but that visit has now been deferred. I hope to undertake it separately before long.
With no option but to accept the enforced lull after mid-December, I chose to visit my niece in Boston. From there, I booked a ticket to Dubai, to visit the new temple near Abu Dhabi and to explore certain possibilities in the UAE. After a brief four-day stay in Dubai, I am scheduled to fly onward to Bengaluru.
Owing to the pace and pressure of these engagements, I have not yet been able to record my experiences in full. Still, whenever time permitted, I noted down and published fragments of my travelogue. These were written in snatches of time—between flights, meetings, and quiet late evenings—and they reflect immediacy rather than completeness. I intend to return to them, and to write more detailed pieces focused on particular journeys and on specific encounters with people in the UK, Europe, and the United States.
As readers may recall, on the very first morning of my arrival in New York, while looking out of the window of Sri Rahul Sur’s nineteenth-floor apartment at the box-shaped buildings of Manhattan—of varying sizes, colours, and heights—I had an unusual encounter with the Statue of Liberty. She appeared before me, spoke to me, and vanished into thin air before I could utter a word in reply.
Thereafter, I encountered her many times. She would appear suddenly, speak, and disappear again—often leaving me little opportunity to respond. I was in no haste to speak to her. I wished first to listen—to observe, to absorb, and to form a first-hand appraisal of the American civilisation in whose name she stood. Only after listening, I felt, does one earn the right to speak.
I did, however, respond to her on many occasions—and at times placed her in troubled reflection, and at other times quietened her.
I now wish to pen down those encounters with the Statue of Liberty—in the supposed land of liberty, the United States—as part of this unfolding travelogue.
I depart America with heartfelt gratitude to all those who hosted me and helped me advance my mission, even if only in part. This includes my first host Rahul and Meenaji at Manhatten, NY, Ashvin and Rakhi at Austin, and my last host, Dr Srinivas K. Rao, Ph.D., a renowned scientist residing in Glen Oaks, New York. Though I could not spend much time with Mrs and Mr Rao, I had a lively and engaging intellectual discussion with Dr Rao during the four-hour drive from New York to Boston, in his self-driven automatic Tesla. By calendar age he may be a senior citizen, but what the French philosopher Bergson called élan vital in him remains wholly unfaded. I also vividly recall the young Pranay Aggarwal’s eager efforts to connect me with many groups across the USA. Thanks also to Ankur Saloni, and the little Dhruva my hosts at Boston.
As I write this piece, I can hear the announcement by the cabin crew that the plane is preparing for take-off, and that we must fasten our seatbelts and shut down our electronic equipment. I look out of the window and find Ms Liberty hovering in the air, waving at me. I promise her that we shall meet again—before long—when I return to complete my mission, and to carry forward my conversations with her.

Question
In Chapter 3, Verse 3 of the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna states that the Sankhya yogis are established in Jnana Yoga (the path of knowledge).
Who is meant here by Sankhya Yoga or a Sankhya yogi?
And what is the real significance of saying that a Sankhya yogi’s steadfastness lies in Jnana Yoga?
Kindly guide us. 🙏🏻🙏🏻Also, please clarify whether a Sankhya yogi should be understood only as one who knows the Sankhya philosophy.
Answer
If the term Sankhya yogi is taken in a narrow sense, it refers to a practitioner who follows the Sankhya philosophy of Sage Kapila. Sankhya is fundamentally a knowledge-centred philosophy, in which the distinction between the Self and Nature is made clear through a careful analysis of fundamental principles.
However, in the Bhagavad Gita the expression Sankhya yogi is not used only in this limited sense. In its broader meaning, a Sankhya yogi is one who is endowed with intellect and discernment—one who is capable of understanding, through rational inquiry, the subtle distinctions between Brahman, the individual soul, and the world. For such seekers, the path of knowledge is naturally more suitable, since their spiritual discipline rests primarily on reflection, discrimination, and contemplation of truth.
Traditionally, seekers who are predominantly oriented toward knowledge have often adopted renunciation and pursued spiritual practice through Jnana. From this standpoint, it is not inappropriate, in a broader sense, to describe Sankhya Yoga as Jnana Yoga accompanied by renunciation.
Thus, it becomes clear that in the Gita the term Sankhya yogi does not merely denote a follower of Kapila’s Sankhya philosophy, but rather a seeker whose steadfastness is grounded in knowledge and discernment.

Revered Guru ji, my respectful salutations 🙏🙏
Gurudev, what are Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Japa Yoga, and Sharanagati Yoga?
Should a follower of Bhagavad Dharma practise all these yogas, or choose only one among them? In other words, how should harmony be established among these yogas?
Kindly guide us. 🙏🙏Answer
All Yogas: Paths to Liberation (Moksha)
All the yogas mentioned here are paths to the attainment of Moksha.
Moksha means complete liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Liberation from this cycle implies that a person becomes free from all kinds of suffering forever, because rebirth itself is the root of all suffering.Verse (Bhagavad Gita 8.15)
mām upetya punar janma duḥkhālayam aśāśvatam |
nāpnuvanti mahātmānaḥ saṁsiddhiṁ paramāṁ gatāḥ ||Meaning:
Those great souls who attain Me do not take birth again in this impermanent world full of suffering; they attain the supreme perfection.Moksha is attained only when there is complete union with God—in other words, when God-realisation takes place.
Karma Yoga
Karma Yoga means engaging in the ordinary duties of life without renouncing the world, while offering every worldly action to God, remaining unattached to the fruits of action, and living in the world without becoming attached to it—this is the essence of Karma Yoga. When this is done, even worldly actions become means to God-realisation, that is, to Moksha.
Verse (Bhagavad Gita 3.19)
tasmād asaktaḥ satataṁ kāryaṁ karma samācara |
asakto hy ācaran karma param āpnoti pūruṣaḥ ||Meaning:
Therefore, perform your obligatory duty continuously without attachment; for by performing action without attachment, a person attains the Supreme state.Bhakti Yoga
Bhakti Yoga means loving God in such a way that God-realisation is ultimately attained. This yoga can be practised both by a renunciate and by one who remains a Karma Yogi.
In Bhakti Yoga, emotion and devotion occupy the central place. Those in whom feeling is predominant and whose love for God is intense find this path especially suitable.
Jnana Yoga
Jnana Yoga is the path in which the intellect is employed more than emotion. It is considered especially suitable for those endowed with sharp intellectual capacity. Generally, it requires a life of renunciation, continuous study of the scriptures, understanding their meanings, and deep contemplation on scriptural teachings. Through such practice, over a long period—sometimes three or four decades—direct (immediate) knowledge of God and the Self becomes possible.
Japa Yoga
In Japa Yoga, the name of the Lord, or a mantra connected with the divine name, is repeated over a long period of time. The deeper the feeling behind the repetition, the more powerful its effect. This path too ultimately leads to God-realisation.
Sharanagati Yoga (The Yoga of Surrender)
In Sharanagati Yoga, not only devotion, knowledge, or japa is present, but along with these there develops a firm conviction:
“I am under the shelter of God; therefore I am always protected.”
Such a practitioner has no need to worry about anything, because God Himself takes responsibility for the devotee’s welfare. Prahlada is the finest example of this.
Sharanagati Yoga is complete in itself. Yet, whichever yoga a person may be practising, if the spirit of surrender arises within, progress in that yoga becomes extraordinarily rapid.
One Path or Many Paths
If even one yoga is followed properly and sincerely, God-realisation and Moksha are certainly attained. It depends on the intensity of one’s spiritual practice whether liberation is attained in this very life or after many births.
The journey to God can be undertaken through any single path. It is much like reaching Delhi: one may go on foot, by train, or by aeroplane. The harmony of multiple paths gives the speed of an aeroplane to spiritual progress.
The ‘Jnani Bhakta’: A Special Indication of the Gita
For this reason, the Bhagavad Gita indicates that when the various yogas are balanced and harmonised, Moksha is attained more quickly. For example, the Lord declares the ‘Jnani Bhakta’—one who is both a knower and a devotee—to be especially dear to Him.
Verse (Bhagavad Gita 7.16)
caturvidhā bhajante māṁ janāḥ sukṛtino’rjuna |
ārto jijñāsur arthārthī jñānī ca bharatarṣabha ||Meaning:
O Arjuna! Four kinds of virtuous people worship Me—the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise.Verse (Bhagavad Gita 7.17)
teṣāṁ jñānī nitya-yukta eka-bhaktir viśiṣyate |
priyo hi jñānino’tyartham ahaṁ sa ca mama priyaḥ ||Meaning:
Among them, the wise one—who is ever united with Me and devoted with single-minded love—is the best; for I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and the wise is dear to Me.Unwavering Devotion in the Path of Knowledge
Even on the path of knowledge, the spirit of unwavering (avyabhicharini) devotion strengthens the practice of knowledge. Therefore, in both Chapter 13 and Chapter 14—devoted to Jnana Yoga—the Lord clearly emphasises the indispensability of devotion.
Verses (Bhagavad Gita 13.10–12)
(quoted)Essence of the meaning:
Among the means of knowledge are freedom from pride, sense-control, detachment, reflection on the suffering inherent in birth and death, and exclusive, unwavering devotion to Me.Verse (Bhagavad Gita 14.26)
māṁ ca yo’vyabhicāreṇa bhakti-yogena sevate |
sa guṇān samatītyaitān brahma-bhūyāya kalpate ||Meaning:
One who serves Me with unwavering devotion transcends the three qualities of nature and becomes fit to attain Brahman.Paths of Renunciates and Household Practitioners
Among these paths, Jnana Yoga and Dhyana Yoga are considered especially suitable for renunciates. Combining them with other yogas is neither mandatory nor always possible. However, spiritual knowledge is beneficial for all paths, even if the complete discipline of Jnana Yoga is not required in the other yogas.
Similarly, Dhyana Yoga primarily concerns meditation on the formless Absolute. Meditation on the formless is not obligatory for Karma Yogis or Bhakti Yogis. For devotees, meditation on the personal (saguna) form of God is considered appropriate.
Conclusion
The path of action (Karma Yoga) can be harmoniously and successfully integrated with Bhakti, Japa, Sharanagati, selfless service, and the dissemination of the knowledge of the Gita. There is no fundamental difficulty in such integration.
