    Question :

“Why was the universe created?” — a child’s question.
    Hari Sharanam 🙏🙏
    (Surrender to the Lord.)

🌿 Question — The Doorway to Knowledge

    — The Journey of Self-Reflection Begins with a Child’s Question

    Introduction

The child has asked a very beautiful question.
Encourage them to keep asking such questions.
It is not necessary that every question receive an immediate or complete answer.
But true knowledge and spirituality always begin with inquiry, not with blind belief.

Even Lord Shri Krishna says the same to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita:

    “Tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā,
    upadekṣyanti te jñānaṁ jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ.”

    (Gita 4.34)

“Approach the wise with humility, inquiry, and service.
The enlightened seers who know the Truth will impart knowledge unto you.”

Thus, paripraśna — the act of sincere questioning — is itself the beginning of spiritual practice.

    The Limits of Human Intellect

    Human intellect is limited.
Whatever we know or understand comes through our senses.
Our senses provide experiences as inputs, and on the basis of those inputs we try to comprehend the world through reason and inference.

But whatever lies beyond the reach of the senses is almost impossible to understand completely.

    An Example

To explain to a person blind from birth what the difference is between the colors “green” and “red” —
this is nearly impossible, for that person has never experienced the concept of color at all.
They may hear the words, but they cannot grasp their meaning through experience.

Similarly, the true nature of the Supreme Being (Paramātma) lies far beyond the limits of our senses and intellect.

    The Three Forms of God

The scriptures describe three principal manifestations of the Divine:

    1. Nirguna, Nirakara Brahman — the formless, attributeless, all-pervading Absolute.
    2. Saguna, Sakara Ishvara (Narayana or Vishnu) — the personal form of God, the preserver of the universe.
    3. Avatara (incarnations such as Rama or Krishna) — the Divine appearing in human form to restore righteousness (Dharma).

Human beings can perceive only a glimpse of the Supreme Brahman through the personal form of God,
and can understand that personal form through the experiences of His incarnations.

Brahma’s Admission — “Even I Do Not Know”

In the Bhagavata Purana, Lord Brahma himself humbly admits that he too does not fully know the Supreme Brahman.
Indeed, he confesses that even the manifested form of God is beyond his complete understanding.

“Jānanta eva jānantu kiṁ bahūktyā na me prabho,
manaso vapuṣo vāco vaibhavaṁ tava gocharaḥ.”

    (Bhāgavata Purāṇa 10.14.38)

“Let those who claim to know You do so, O Lord.
As for me, I admit — Your glory is beyond the reach of my mind, body, and speech.”

The Origin of Creation — The Divine Play

The Bhagavata Purana describes that when the time came for creation,
the Supreme Brahman manifested as Narayana (Vishnu).
From His navel lotus emerged Brahma, and from Brahma’s mind came Rudra and the rest of creation.

This entire process of cosmic creation is called Ishvara’s Māyāmayī Līlā
    the Divine Play of God.

    (Bhāgavata Purāṇa 3.26.4)

The word “Līlā” means play, drama, or divine sport.
Just as the Rāma-līlā enacts the life of Lord Rama on stage,
this entire universe is the grand stage of God’s Divine Play.

    “But Why This Play?”

This is exactly the kind of question your child has asked:

“If God is omniscient, omnipotent, and blissful,
then why does He perform this play?
Why has He created the cycle of birth and death, of joy and sorrow?”

This question is not only that of a child’s innocent curiosity —
it is the very question that the ancient rishis (sages) also asked.

And in the end, even they said:
“This is the Divine Play of the Lord, and its mystery lies beyond human comprehension.”

    Conclusion — Keep Asking Questions

Yet, the very arising of such a question is of great significance.
It is through such inquiries that a person moves toward discernment (viveka), reflection (chintan), and self-realization (ātma-bodha).

Encourage your child to keep thinking, to keep searching for answers on their own.
For when the next generation continues to ask the same eternal questions that the sages once asked,
it is then that the true tradition of spirituality lives on.

    Travelogue – 1

Three Decades Later: A Return to England

    — Brahm Bodhi

It was the year 1996 when I first came to England.
That period, filled with youthful energy, curiosity, and a deep urge to understand an unseen world, remains fresh in my memory even today.

Most of my time was spent in Yorkshire — a place of serene beauty and historic charm that left a lasting impression on my heart. During that stay, I also had the opportunity to visit Northern Ireland, Scotland, and London.

    Time turns its wheel ceaselessly.
Nearly thirty years later, destiny once again brought me to England — and I found myself standing at London’s Heathrow Airport.
The same country, the same air, the same names — and yet, the experience felt somehow new.

This time, I realized that India’s airports, especially those in Delhi and Bengaluru, have now surpassed Heathrow in both modernity and efficiency.
The very nation we once looked up to as a model now seemed a little different while India, once called a “developing country,” appeared radiant with self-confidence and vitality.

    An Old Memory

A small incident from thirty years ago still lingers vividly in my mind.
I was sitting at a bus station in Birmingham, beside an elderly British gentleman.
    With simple curiosity, he asked,

    “Which country are you from?”

    I replied, “From India.”

He paused for a moment, gazing at the sky, as though trying to locate India on the map of his mind. Then, slowly he said,

    “Oh! That poor country… India!”

There was no contempt in his voice, but a subtle tone of pity.
At that moment, a faint sting arose within me — as if someone had called the very soul of my nation impoverished.

India Today — A New Experience

Now, standing on the same soil after so many years, the scene felt different.
Heathrow Airport no longer appeared as grand as before; the shine of its walls had dimmed a little, and even the glow on people’s faces seemed reduced.

In contrast, India’s airports — with their cleanliness, management, and dignity — now stand on par with, those of many developed nations.

The world is changing. Nations are changing.
And India — India has awakened with a new consciousness.

Yet, not all changes are the same.

    When I first came here, one British pound was equal to ₹70;
    today it is around ₹120.
    At that time, one US dollar was about ₹27;
today it is close to ₹100.

Currencies have changed, values have changed —
but the greatest transformation is in India’s mindset.

It is no longer the “poor and helpless India” once pitied by others.
It is now a self-assured India — a nation offering the world new perspectives through its wisdom, culture, and progress.

    In the End

Much has changed over these three decades,
yet one thing remains the same —
    the eternal human quest:
the search to gain, to know,
and ultimately, to discover the Divine within oneself.

The air of Heathrow still carries the same chill,
but somewhere within me burns a new warmth —
the flame of India’s awakened soul,
ready now to illumine the world.

    “Oh! That poor country… India!”

    हीथ्रो एयरपोर्ट पहले जैसा भव्य नहीं लगा — उसकी दीवारों की चमक कुछ फीकी पड़ गई थी। लोगों के चेहरों की चमक भी कम हो गई थी।
    वहीं दूसरी ओर भारत के आधुनिक हवाईअड्डे — उनकी स्वच्छता, प्रबंधन और गरिमा — अब किसी भी विकसित देश से कम नहीं।

    दुनिया बदल रही है, देश बदल रहे हैं — और भारत तो मानो नई चेतना से जाग उठा है।
    पर हर परिवर्तन एक जैसा नहीं होता।

    जब मैं पहली बार आया था, उस समय एक ब्रिटिश पाउंड ₹70 के बराबर था;
    आज वही लगभग ₹120 है।
    तब एक अमेरिकी डॉलर ₹27 का पड़ता था;
    आज लगभग ₹100 का।

    मुद्राएँ बदली हैं, मूल्य बदले हैं —
    पर सबसे बड़ा परिवर्तन है भारत की मानसिकता में।
    अब वह देश ‘गरीब और दीन भारत’ नहीं, बल्कि आत्मविश्वास से भरा भारत है — जो अपने ज्ञान, संस्कृति और प्रगति से पूरी दुनिया को नया दृष्टिकोण दे रहा है।

    अंत में

    तीस वर्षों के अंतराल में बहुत कुछ बदल गया —
    पर जो नहीं बदला, वह है मानव की खोज —
    कुछ पाने की, कुछ जानने की, और अंततः अपने भीतर ईश्वर को पहचानने की।

    हीथ्रो की हवा में आज भी वही ठंडक है, पर भीतर कहीं एक नया ताप है —
    भारत की आत्मा का ताप, जो अब दुनिया को आलोकित करने के लिए तैयार है।

Shri Vishnu and Shri Krishna: Who is the Source, and Who is the Incarnation?

    Question:
    Revered Brahmabodhi Siddharth Guruji,
I seek your guidance to resolve a doubt.
In our scriptures and Puranas, Lord Vishnu is described as having ten major incarnations (Dashavatara), one of whom is Lord Krishna, who is said to be a Purnavatara—a complete incarnation of Vishnu.

However, when I was studying under the Bhakti Vriksha program of ISKCON, I was taught that Krishna is not an incarnation of Vishnu; rather, Vishnu is an incarnation of Krishna. This creates confusion in my mind. Kindly explain, Gurudev—what is the truth?

    Answer (Brahmabodhi):
This topic needs to be understood with a calm and serious mind.
In spirituality, faith (shraddha) holds supreme importance. When a devotee firmly believes that their chosen deity (Ishta Devata) is the highest and the ultimate truth, their devotion and surrender deepen greatly. This is why we often find that saints and teachers try to establish the supremacy of their own deity.

The Ramcharitmanas is a beautiful example of this. In this scripture, two viewpoints appear regarding Shri Rama—on one hand, Tulsidas describes him as an incarnation of Vishnu; on the other, at several places, he declares that Shri Rama himself is the eternal Supreme Being from whom Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva) all originate.

At first glance, these two perspectives within the same text may seem contradictory, and they can indeed cause confusion among seekers.

Similarly, traditions that worship Shri Krishna, such as ISKCON and other Vaishnava schools, regard Shri Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead (Parama Purushottama Bhagavan) and consider Vishnu, Brahma, and Mahesh as emanations from Him.

However, it is important to understand that such interpretations arise from faith and devotion, not from logic or philosophical reasoning—and therefore, faith should not be entangled in argument or debate.

From the standpoint of the majority of scriptures, Shri Vishnu (or Narayana) is regarded as the Supreme Lord, and Shri Rama and Shri Krishna are His incarnations.
Even in the Bhagavata Purana, Krishna is frequently described as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. There is a well-known episode in the Bhagavatam where Krishna and Arjuna travel across the worlds to retrieve a Brahmin’s dead sons. Eventually, they reach the abode of Vishnu, where both offer Him their salutations. This clearly indicates who is the source (Avatari) and who is the incarnation (Avatara).

Likewise, in the Bhagavad Gita, when Shri Krishna reveals His universal form (Vishvarupa) to Arjuna, that form is the four-armed divine form of Vishnu, not Krishna’s human form. In that divine vision, Arjuna beholds the entire cosmos contained within the Vishnu-form. This too points to Vishnu as the Supreme Source. If the entire creation were meant to be seen in Krishna’s own personal form, the Vishvarupa would have manifested in that same form.

Therefore, from a scriptural perspective, the truth is that Shri Vishnu is the source—the Avatari—while Shri Rama and Shri Krishna are His complete incarnations (Purna Avatara). They too are the full manifestation of the Supreme—Saguna Brahman, the Divine with attributes.

Just as when the complete whole gives rise to another complete whole, nothing is diminished—similarly, even though Shri Rama and Shri Krishna are incarnations of Vishnu, they are in no way lesser or different from Him. They are identical to Vishnu in essence, divinity, and power. It is the same Vishnu who manifests in different forms for different divine purposes and leelas (divine plays).

    Hence, the conclusion is this:
Shri Vishnu is the Avatari—the source of incarnations—
and Shri Rama and Shri Krishna are His Purna Avatars—complete manifestations of that same Supreme Being.

From the viewpoint of faith, one may consider any form to be supreme,
but from the scriptural standpoint, there is no real distinction among the three—
only differences in their divine play and expressions of emotion.

    प्रश्न : पूजनीय ब्रह्मबोधी सिद्धार्थ गुरु जी,
    एक शंका का समाधान चाहिए था कृपा करके प्रदान करे।
    हमारे शास्त्रों और पुराणों में भगवान विष्णु जी के दशावतार बताए गए हैं जिनमें से एक श्री कृष्ण जो कि विष्णु भगवान के पूर्णवतार कहे जाते हैं।
    लेकिन जब मैं इस्कॉन में भक्ति वृक्ष की शिक्षा ग्रहण करता था तो मुझे ये बताया गया था कि श्री कृष्ण विष्णु जी के अवतार नहीं है बल्कि विष्णु जी श्री कृष्ण के अवतार हैं। इस तरह से संशय पैदा होता है तो सच्चाई क्या है गुरुदेव कृपया स्पष्ट करे।

    उत्तर (ब्रह्मबोधि);
    इस विषय को थोड़ा गंभीर होकर समझने की आवश्यकता है।
    अध्यात्म में श्रद्धा का अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण स्थान है। जब साधक को यह विश्वास होता है कि उसका आराध्य ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ और सर्वोपरि है, तो उसकी भक्ति और निष्ठा और गहरी हो जाती है। यही कारण है कि संतों में यह प्रवृत्ति देखी जाती है कि वे अपने आराध्य को सर्वोच्च सिद्ध करने का प्रयास करते हैं।

    रामचरितमानस इसका उत्तम उदाहरण है। इस ग्रंथ में श्रीराम के संबंध में दो प्रकार की भावनाएँ मिलती हैं — एक ओर तुलसीदास जी उन्हें विष्णु का अवतार बताते हैं, वहीं दूसरी ओर कई स्थलों पर वे यह भी कहते हैं कि श्रीराम ही अनादि परमेश्वर हैं, जिनसे ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश — तीनों की उत्पत्ति हुई है। एक ही ग्रंथ में इन दो दृष्टिकोणों का उपस्थित होना प्रथम दृष्टया आश्चर्यजनक लग सकता है, और अनेक साधकों में इससे मतिभ्रम भी होता है।

    इसी प्रकार, जो संप्रदाय श्रीकृष्ण की उपासना करते हैं, जैसे इस्कॉन आदि, वे श्रीकृष्ण को ही परम पुरुषोत्तम भगवान मानते हैं और विष्णु, ब्रह्मा, महेश को उनसे निकला हुआ बताते हैं।
    परंतु यह समझना आवश्यक है कि ऐसे विचार श्रद्धा की उपज हैं, और श्रद्धा को तर्क या विचार से उलझाना उचित नहीं है।

    अधिकांश शास्त्रों में श्रीविष्णु (या नारायण) को ही सर्वोपरि ईश्वर माना गया है, और श्रीराम तथा श्रीकृष्ण को उनके अवतार बताया गया है।
    भागवत पुराण में भी प्रायः श्रीकृष्ण को भगवान विष्णु का अवतार कहा गया है। भागवत में एक प्रसिद्ध प्रसंग आता है, जहाँ श्रीकृष्ण अर्जुन के साथ एक ब्राह्मण के मृत पुत्रों को वापस लाने के लिए समस्त लोकों की यात्रा करते हैं और अंततः श्रीविष्णु के धाम में पहुँचकर उन्हें प्रणाम करते हैं। उस प्रसंग से यह स्पष्ट होता है कि अवतार कौन है और अवतारी कौन।

    इसी प्रकार भगवद्गीता में भी जब श्रीकृष्ण अर्जुन को अपना विश्वरूप दिखाते हैं, तो वह रूप चतुर्भुज विष्णु-स्वरूप का होता है, न कि उनके मानव रूप का। उस दिव्य दर्शन में अर्जुन समस्त ब्रह्मांड को विष्णु-रूप में ही समाहित देखता है। यह भी इंगित करता है कि अवतारी रूप विष्णु का ही है। यदि समस्त सृष्टि को कृष्ण-स्वरूप में ही धारण करना होता, तो विश्वरूप भी उसी रूप में प्रकट होता।

    इस प्रकार शास्त्रीय दृष्टि से सत्य यही है कि श्रीविष्णु ही श्रीराम और श्रीकृष्ण — दोनों के मूल स्रोत हैं।
    परंतु यह भी उतना ही सत्य है कि श्रीराम और श्रीकृष्ण विष्णु के पूर्ण अवतार हैं। वे भी पूर्ण सगुण ब्रह्म हैं।

    जैसे पूर्ण से यदि पूर्ण निकाला जाए, तो भी पूर्ण ही शेष रहता है — उसी प्रकार श्रीविष्णु के अवतार होने का अर्थ यह नहीं है कि श्रीराम या श्रीकृष्ण किसी भी प्रकार से उनसे भिन्न या कम हैं। वे स्वरूप, ऐश्वर्य और शक्ति में श्रीविष्णु के ही समान हैं, बल्कि साक्षात् श्रीविष्णु ही हैं जो विभिन्न लीलाओं के लिए भिन्न रूपों में प्रकट होते हैं।

    अतः निष्कर्ष यही है —
    अवतारी श्रीविष्णु हैं, और श्रीराम व श्रीकृष्ण उनके पूर्ण अवतार।
    श्रद्धा की दृष्टि से चाहे कोई भी रूप सर्वोच्च लगे, पर शास्त्र दृष्टि से तीनों में भेद नहीं, केवल लीलाओं और भावों का अंतर है।

    (भगवद् अनुभूति के पाँच सोपान)

    साधना के पथ पर चलने वाले साधक को अनेक प्रकार की आध्यात्मिक अनुभूतियाँ होती हैं।
    इनमें एक अत्यंत दुर्लभ और पवित्र अनुभूति है — ईश्वर-दर्शन।
    प्रभु-दर्शन एक ही प्रकार का नहीं होता; यह साधक की अवस्था और अंतःशुद्धि के अनुसार पाँच रूपों में प्रकट होता है।

    १. स्वप्न-दर्शन — निद्रा में दिव्यता का स्पर्श

    कभी ईश्वर स्वप्न में प्रकट होकर दर्शन देते हैं।
    यह सुनने में सहज प्रतीत होता है, परंतु यह दुर्लभतम है।
    अनेक साधकों ने आजीवन साधना के बाद भी अनुभव किया कि उन्हें स्वप्न में भी प्रभु-दर्शन नहीं हुए।
    इस प्रकार का दर्शन सूक्ष्म जगत की पहली झलक है, जहाँ आत्मा और ईश्वर का संवाद प्रारंभ होता है।

    २. आवृत्त-दर्शन — छद्म रूप में करुणा का अवतरण

    कभी-कभी ईश्वर अपने भक्त की सहायता के लिए किसी अन्य रूप में आते हैं,
    परंतु अपने वास्तविक स्वरूप को आवृत्त रखते हैं — अर्थात छिपा लेते हैं।
    उस क्षण भक्त को इसका भान नहीं होता, पर शीघ्र ही यह स्पष्ट हो जाता है कि वह कोई अन्य नहीं, स्वयं प्रभु ही थे।

    भगवान भक्त की रक्षा के लिए किसी भी रूप में अवतरित हो सकते हैं।
    मेरे एक गुरुजी, जो रामचरितमानस के प्रवक्ता थे,
    एक बार गाँव में प्रवचन के लिए आमंत्रित किए गए।
    रास्ते में गंगा पार करनी थी, किंतु भीषण वर्षा और आँधी से उन्हें लौटना पड़ा।
    दो दिन बाद गाँववाले आए और बोले —
    “आपका प्रवचन अद्भुत रहा, सबको गहरा आनंद मिला।”

    गुरुजी मौन रहे, किंतु बाद में मुझसे कहा —
    “इसमें कोई संशय नहीं कि श्रीराम ने मेरे स्थान पर स्वयं जाकर प्रवचन किया।”
    परिस्थितियाँ ऐसी थीं कि अन्य कोई निष्कर्ष संभव ही नहीं था।
    यह वही आवृत्त-दर्शन था — जब प्रभु अपने स्वरूप को छिपाकर भक्त के कार्य को पूर्ण करते हैं।

    ३. ध्यान-दर्शन — अंतर्मन में साक्षात्कार

    तीसरा दर्शन ध्यान के माध्यम से होता है।
    जब भक्त गहन ध्यान में अपने आराध्य का चिंतन करता है,
    तो वह रूप सजीव होकर प्रकट होता है और वार्तालाप भी करता है।

    मेरे अन्य गुरु ब्रह्मचारीजी को ऐसे ध्यान-दर्शन प्रतिदिन हुआ करते थे।
    वे भगवान श्रीकृष्ण से भक्तों की पीड़ा का निवेदन करते थे।
    यदि भगवान अनुमति देते, तो वे तुलसीदल का एक पत्र उस भक्त को देते —
    और वह रोगमुक्त हो जाता।
    यदि अनुमति न मिलती, तो कोई औषधि प्रभावी नहीं होती।
    यह दर्शाता है कि ध्यान-दर्शन केवल कल्पना नहीं,
    बल्कि आत्मा और ईश्वर का जीवंत संवाद है।

    ४. प्रत्यक्ष या चाक्षुष-दर्शन — जब प्रभु सम्मुख आते हैं

    जब ईश्वर अपने भक्त को उसी रूप में प्रत्यक्ष दर्शन देते हैं,
    जिस रूप में वह उनकी उपासना करता है,
    तो उसे चाक्षुष-दर्शन कहते हैं।
    यह दर्शन खुली आँखों से होता है,
    और इसके साथ जो भाव-ज्वार उमड़ता है, वह वर्णनातीत है।
    ब्रह्मचारीजी को यह प्रत्यक्ष दर्शन भी प्राप्त हुआ था —
    वे भगवान को अपने सम्मुख सजीव देख सकते थे।

    ५. दिव्य-दृष्टि-दर्शन — विराट की अनुभूति

    यह दर्शन प्राकृतिक नेत्रों से नहीं, बल्कि दिव्य दृष्टि से होता है।
    जैसे भगवद् गीता में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने अर्जुन को अपना विराट स्वरूप दिखाया,
    परंतु पहले उसे दिव्य दृष्टि प्रदान की,
    क्योंकि सामान्य नेत्र उस रूप को देख ही नहीं सकते थे।

    कुछ भक्तों को भी यही दिव्य दृष्टि प्राप्त होती है —
    वे श्रीकृष्ण-कालीन वृंदावन या श्रीराम-कालीन अयोध्या की लीलाओं का प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव करते रहते हैं।
    यह दृष्टि स्थान या काल की सीमा से परे होती है;
    यह आत्मा को उन दिव्य लोकों तक पहुँचा देती है, जहाँ ईश्वर स्वयं प्रकट रहते हैं।

    सगुण और निर्गुण दोनों के लिए

    ये सभी अनुभूतियाँ सामान्यतः सगुण उपासकों को होती हैं,
    परंतु कभी-कभी निराकार साधक भी इन दर्शनों से विभोर हो उठते हैं।
    श्री श्यामचरण लाहिड़ी (लाहिड़ी महाशय) इसका उदाहरण हैं —
    जो ध्यानयोगी होकर भी ईश्वर के सगुण रूपों के दर्शन करते थे।

    परमहंस योगानंदजी ने Autobiography of a Yogi में लिखा है कि
    एक बार जब वे अमेरिका के एक होटल में ठहरे थे,
    तो खिड़की से बाहर आकाश की ओर देखते हुए
    उन्हें भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के साक्षात् दर्शन हुए।

    समापन — दर्शन का सार

    ईश्वर-दर्शन का प्रत्येक रूप अपनी गरिमा रखता है।
    कोई स्वप्न में उन्हें देखता है, कोई ध्यान में सुनता है,
    कोई खुली आँखों से, तो कोई दिव्य नेत्रों से।
    परंतु मूल सत्य एक ही है —
    जहाँ सच्ची श्रद्धा है, वहीं ईश्वर प्रकट हैं।

    (The Five Stages of God-Realization)

A seeker walking on the path of spiritual practice experiences many kinds of inner revelations.
Among them, one of the rarest and most sacred is the Darshan—the vision of God.
Divine vision is not of one kind; it manifests in five distinct forms depending on the seeker’s spiritual state and inner purity.

    1. Dream Vision — The Touch of Divinity in Sleep

Sometimes, God appears in a dream and grants His vision.
Though it may sound simple, it is exceedingly rare.
Many lifelong seekers have confessed that even after years of spiritual practice, they never once had a divine dream.
This type of vision offers the first glimpse into the subtle realm, where the soul’s dialogue with the Divine begins.

    2. Veiled Vision — The Descent of Compassion in Disguise

At times, God takes another form to help His devotee,
yet conceals His true identity — that is, He remains veiled.
In that moment, the devotee does not realize who it was,
but soon it becomes clear that it was none other than the Lord Himself.

God can assume any form to protect His devotee.
One of my teachers, a revered preacher of Ramcharitmanas,
was once invited to deliver a discourse in a village.
He had to cross the Ganga River, but due to a terrible storm and rain, he had to return.
Two days later, the villagers arrived saying,
“Your discourse was wonderful; everyone was deeply moved.”

The teacher remained silent for a while and then said to me,
“There is no doubt that Lord Rama Himself came and spoke in my place.”
The circumstances left no other explanation possible.
That was Veiled Vision—when God hides His form yet fulfills the devotee’s work.

    3. Meditative Vision — Communion Within

The third kind of vision occurs through meditation.
When a devotee contemplates deeply upon the chosen deity,
that form becomes alive before the inner eye and even engages in conversation.

Another of my teachers, Brahmachariji, used to experience such visions daily.
He would speak to Lord Krishna on behalf of suffering devotees.
If the Lord granted permission, he would give a single Tulsi leaf to that devotee—
and the person would be healed.
If permission was not granted, no medicine would work.
This shows that Meditative Vision is not mere imagination,
but a living communion between the soul and God.

    4. Direct or Ocular Vision — When the Lord Appears Before You

When God appears to the devotee in the very form in which he worships Him,
it is called Direct Vision (Chakshush Darshan).
    This occurs with open eyes,
and the flood of divine emotion that follows is beyond description.
Brahmachariji too received such a vision—
he could see the Lord standing vividly before him.

    5. Vision Through Divine Sight — The Experience of the Cosmic Form

This vision is not through physical eyes but through Divine Sight.
As described in the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna revealed His Vishvarupa (Universal Form) to Arjuna,
but first granted him divine vision,
for ordinary eyes cannot behold such a form.

Some devotees too are blessed with this divine sight—
they directly witness the pastimes of Krishna’s Vrindavan or Rama’s Ayodhya.
    This vision transcends time and space;
it carries the soul into those divine realms where God eternally abides.

For Both the Formed and the Formless Paths

These experiences usually occur to those devoted to the saguna (with form) aspect of God,
yet at times even seekers of the nirguna (formless) Reality are overwhelmed by such visions.
A shining example is Sri Shyamacharan Lahiri (Lahiri Mahasaya),
a yogi of meditation who still had visions of the personal forms of God.

Paramhansa Yogananda, in his Autobiography of a Yogi, wrote that
once, while staying in a hotel in America,
he looked out of the window toward the sky
and there beheld the living vision of Lord Krishna Himself.

Conclusion — The Essence of Vision

Each form of divine vision has its own grandeur.
Some see God in dreams, some behold Him in meditation,
some with open eyes, and some through divine sight.
But the underlying truth is one —
where there is true faith, there God is manifest.

    Dear Atman Shri Kheda,

I am deeply pleased to see your impatience for attaining God, for when there is no impatience, there is no attainment.

In truth, we are all travellers — voyagers toward moksha, toward Vaikuntha.
But just as one needs a ticket to board an airplane, a ticket is needed for that journey too.
There is no free travel. And that ticket cannot be bought with rupees or dollars — the currency there is different.

I had told you about that currency — it is described in the Bhagavad Gita, verses 12:13–20 and 16:1–3 — upon which you remarked, “That is a very difficult currency.”

The duty of a guide or guru is to show the right path.
There is no better Google Map to Vaikuntha or moksha than the Bhagavad Gita.
Hence, I gave you directions from that divine map itself.
Now, walking upon that path is the traveller’s own task.
Each has his own personal journey.
So do not be disheartened — you must walk yourself; your guide or guru cannot walk on your behalf.

The emotions, thoughts, and values contained in the verses I shared with you —
to absorb them fully is to become a mahatma, to become dharmatma.
As far as I know, reaching there is impossible without becoming dharmatma.

God has revealed a very simple way of becoming dharmatma in the Bhagavad Gita:

Api chet suduracharo bhakto mam ananya-bhak,
sadhur eva sa mantavyah samyag vyavasito hi sah.
    (Chapter 9, Verse 30)

Meaning: “Even if a person of extremely sinful conduct worships Me with exclusive devotion, he should be regarded as a saint, for he has rightly resolved.”

Remember — in this verse, ananya means “of none other”— devoted to only One, and not to any other deity.
In the worship of other gods, becoming dharmatma is not essential, because most of them are rajasic or tamasic in nature. They do not necessarily require their devotees to be virtuous.
Nor do they promise that their worshippers will automatically become dharmatma.
Ravana worshipped Shiva, performed austerities, but did not become virtuous — because Lord Mahadeva imposes no such condition. His doors are open to both gods and demons.
The scriptures tell us that nearly all demons performed penance to Shiva or Brahma to fulfill evil desires, and Brahma and Shiva granted those boons — even when those boons endangered creation.
I am not speaking my own mind — I am only repeating what the scriptures affirm.

Compassion, kindness toward all beings, and becoming dharmatma are obligatory only for the devotees of Shri Hari or His incarnations — Shri Rama and Shri Krishna — and these qualities naturally awaken through their devotion.
That is what the scriptures declare.
See this verse of the Gita:

    Sadhur eva sa mantavyah samyag vyavasito hi sah;
Kshipram bhavati dharmatma shashvac chantim nigacchati.
    (Chapter 9, Verse 31)

Meaning: “That very sinner soon becomes righteous and attains lasting peace.”

Therefore, choose one among Shri Hari, Shri Rama, or Shri Krishna —
and dedicate your mind to Him.
Worship all three as manifestations of Hari Himself — that is why all three are called “Hari.”

So, do not consider becoming dharmatma to be difficult.
    You will become dharmatma naturally.

But devotion will awaken only when you read their scriptures — Ramcharitmanas, Bhagavata Purana, and the Bhagavad Gita.

    Do this much.
Then, when time permits, I shall teach you a meditation practice — extremely simple, yet one whose impact upon character is immediate.
You begin to transform inwardly at once.
I intend to teach this meditation to all group members who have a deep desire to become dharmatma.

Give me a little time — I am leaving abroad on the 26th.
Many preparations are underway for this journey, and I may have to stay away for a somewhat long period.
Hence, the pending works must be completed first.

This much I can say — with certainty:
Whoever among you sincerely desires it, God will surely come near to him.
In that situation, God has no choice left.
