On the 30th of November, the Dartford Temple, London, organised a programme in which I was invited to address children—and, by extension, their parents—on some of the common questions asked about Sanatan Dharma, along with their answers. The second session focused on study skills for students.
Although the primary audience was the children, the parents naturally became part of the session, for in both matters—in nurturing an understanding of Sanatan Dharma, especially the Gita, and in developing sound study habits—the role of parents is essential.
The temple requested that whenever I am in England, I set aside some time for children and parents, to guide them on Sanatan Dharma and, in particular, the teachings of the Gita, as well as on effective study skills.
While the complete footage of all the sessions will soon be available on YouTube, here is a photograph and a short video.

A memorable evening unfolded at the Nehru Centre, London, during the Gita Mahotsav.
I had the opportunity to share a reflection on the Cosmic Drama—reconstructed from the account of creation found in the Bhagavad Gita—between the dance presentations organised by the #SanskrutiCentre, London.
The Nehru Centre hall was filled with scholars, senior professionals, and an attentive, enlightened audience.
I am sharing a couple of photographs that have reached me so far. My thanks to #Ragasudha ji, the noted choreographer and dancer of England, for the gracious gesture of placing the shawl on behalf of the organisers, and to Councillor Shri Sharad Kumar Jha for introducing me to the Sanskriti Centre for a talk on the Bhagavad Gita.

When the Gita speaks of self-restraint, it does not speak of harsh discipline, punishment, or inflicting pain upon oneself. It speaks in a very natural, very human way. To keep one’s senses, one’s mind, and one’s desires within a reasonable and ethical boundary—this is true self-restraint. It is not suppressing the mind; it is guiding it. It is not destroying the senses; it is giving them their proper place.
In the second chapter, the Lord says:
“Rāga-dveṣa-viyuktais tu viṣayān indriyaiś caran Ātma-vaśyair vidheyātmā prasādam adhigacchati.” (2.64)
One who moves among sense-objects, free from attachment and aversion, with senses held under self-control—such a person attains inner calm, a quiet joy. This is the first note of self-restraint: no pressure, no violence—only clarity and balance.
In the sixth chapter the Lord offers a deeper insight:
A person must lift oneself by one’s own mind, not degrade oneself. The mind is indeed one’s friend, and the mind is also one’s enemy. The day the mind receives the right direction, the path becomes easier.
And then He adds:
“Tatraikāgram manaḥ kṛtvā yata-cittendriya-kriyaḥ.” (6.12) Make the mind one-pointed. Restrain the senses. This is the foundation of yoga.
One who has mastered the mind finds the greatest ally within oneself.
All these verses carry the same message— The mind is not to be hurt but understood. The senses are not to be crushed but held in balance. This is the spirit that flows throughout the Gita.
Now the opposite—Self-mortification
In the broader Indian tradition, severe austerities—fasting, bodily hardship, difficult vows—were sometimes considered great achievements. But the Gita takes a very different and very compassionate view.
Those who, out of ignorance, torture their own bodies should know that they also torment Me, who dwell in that very body. Such tendencies are called demonic.
Austerity performed foolishly, causing pain to oneself or to others—this is called tāmasik tapas, the lowest form of austerity.
Here the Lord speaks in the voice of a compassionate teacher: “Do not hurt yourself. I am not pleased by pain. I am pleased by love. I dwell in restraint, not in self-violence.”
The Gita’s Final Conclusion
God is not pleased with those who torture their bodies. He is pleased with those who remove the suffering of others, who become a reason for someone’s smile, who keep their senses and mind in healthy balance, who live with harmony, clarity and peace.
This is the Gita’s teaching on self-restraint— a discipline that uplifts the self, never one that breaks it.

Question
Gurudev pranam 🙏🙏 Can prarabdha karma be erased by devotion to God or by present (kriyaman) karma? Or must prarabdha necessarily be experienced? Kindly guide 🙏🙏
Answer
To understand this question correctly, we must first understand the structure of the world and the laws by which it operates.
Bhagavan creates the universe through Prakriti. He calls Himself the father of creation and Prakriti the mother—this He states clearly in the Gita. Consider these two verses:
“mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ sūyate sacarācaram । hetunānena kaunteya jagad viparivartate ॥” (Bhagavad Gita 9.10) Meaning: Under My supervision, Prakriti brings forth the entire moving and unmoving world. O Kaunteya, because of this, the universe constantly revolves and transforms.
“sarva-yoniṣu kaunteya mūrtayaḥ sambhavanti yāḥ । tāsāṃ brahma mahad yonir ahaṃ bīja-pradaḥ pitā ॥” (Bhagavad Gita 14.4) Meaning: O Arjuna, whatever forms arise in all species, their mother is the great Prakriti, and I am the seed-giving father.
Bhagavan created Prakriti and also the laws that govern Prakriti. Prakriti functions according to those laws. She is an impersonal, invisible force that performs the task assigned to her without any partiality.
She does not see whether the doer of the deed is a devotee or non-devotee, a virtuous person or a sinner, a king or a pauper. She records every action in her invisible “computer” and fixes its results accordingly. She leaves no one untouched.
Therefore, everyone must receive the reward or punishment of their actions under the Law of Karma, the divine law. Our good and bad deeds from past lives create what we call prarabdha or destiny.
That is why Bhagavan says:
(Bhagavad Gita 9.29)
Meaning: I am equal to all beings; none is hateful or dear to Me. But those who worship Me with devotion abide in Me, and I abide in them.
Meaning: The Law of Karma applies equally to all.
However, like every general rule, there are exceptions.
When a person becomes fully surrendered to God, when his heart becomes pure, stainless, and devoted, when he becomes truly righteous and takes Bhagavan as his sole refuge, then Bhagavan begins to destroy his sins gradually.
For this state, Bhagavan declares in the Gita:
“api chet su-durācāro bhajate mām ananya-bhāk । sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ samyag vyavasito hi saḥ ॥” “kṣipraṃ bhavati dharmātmā śaśvac-chāntiṃ nigacchati । kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati ॥” (Bhagavad Gita 9.30–31)
Meaning: Even if a person is extremely sinful, if he worships Me with exclusive devotion, he must be regarded as a saint, for he has chosen the right resolve. He quickly becomes righteous and attains lasting peace. O Kaunteya, know with certainty that My devotee never perishes.
And about the power of exclusive devotion, Bhagavan says:
Meaning: Those who worship Me with single-pointed devotion—I carry their yoga (acquisition of what they lack) and kṣema (preservation of what they have).
Now to the central part of the question—there are three types of prarabdha:
Ordinary prarabdha
Medium prarabdha
Difficult (intense) prarabdha
Through worship of God, devotion, and surrender:
Ordinary and medium prarabdha are either destroyed or their impact becomes so mild that it resembles going out in heavy rain with an umbrella—a few drops may touch you, but you do not get drenched.
But very difficult prarabdha, which arises from extremely heavy past sins, generally must be experienced, although Bhagavan reduces its severity.
Our actions in this life—called kriyaman karma—usually influence only ordinary and medium prarabdha. Difficult prarabdha can be altered only by very high-level righteousness and exclusive devotion.
And yet the final truth is this:
The highest, absolute, and unwavering surrender to God can destroy any type of prarabdha, or at the very least, reduce its pain and harshness to a remarkable degree.

Question Revered Gurudev, pranam 🙏🙏 What kind of charity should a Bhagavad Dharma follower give? What are the Gita’s thoughts on the different aspects of charity?
Answer
Charity is a deeply serious subject. Why we give, what we give, how we give, and to whom we give—each of these is important, and the Bhagavad Gita offers clear guidance on all these aspects.
Charity is a value that elevates a person inwardly and makes the outer world happier and more harmonious. In the Gita, charity is not described merely as a social duty; it is presented as an essential part of inner purification and welfare of the world. There are two fundamental reasons behind charity—one internal, the other external.
Why Give Charity: The Internal Reason
(a) Charity purifies the mind
Giving makes the mind pure. The Gita says:
“Pāvanāni manīṣiṇām” — “Charity purifies the wise.” (18.5)
Thus, the first purpose of giving is to cleanse oneself inwardly. The giver feels a quiet joy and contentment within.
(b) Charity promotes the welfare of all
The second reason is the welfare of others. Throughout the Gita, Bhagavan emphasises “loka-saṅgraha” (holding society together), “paropakāra” (doing good to others), and “sarva-bhūta-hita” (the welfare of all beings) as supportive of the path to liberation.
A true sage, Krishna says, is one who remains devoted to the good of all beings:
“Sarvabhūta-hite ratāḥ” (5.25)
—Those who are calm, free of sin, and engaged in the welfare of all beings attain brahma-nirvāṇa.
Meaning: “In the Vedas, in sacrifices, in austerities, and in charity—merit is gained.” Thus, charity is inherently meritorious.
What Should One Give?
Charity means giving freely what brings good to the recipient.
Though financial charity is central—because money can meet many needs— charity is not limited to money.
One may give:
Money
Food
Clothes (especially blankets and warm clothing in winter)
Books (to spread learning)
Education
Service
Land
Organ donation, eye donation, etc.
Everyone should give according to their capacity.
To Whom Should One Give? What Kind of Charity Is Supreme?
The Gita (Chapter 17) describes three kinds of charity:
(a) Sāttvika Charity
“Dātavyam iti yad dānaṃ dīyate ’nupakāriṇe…” (17.20)
—Charity given with the feeling, “It is my duty to give,” at the right time, in the right place, to a worthy person, and without expecting anything in return, is sāttvika charity.
This is the best form of charity.
(b) Rājasa Charity
Charity given reluctantly, with discomfort, or with the desire for reward or return— is rājasa. (17.21)
(c) Tāmasa Charity
Charity given at the wrong time, in the wrong place, to an undeserving person, or given with disrespect— is tāmasa. (17.22)
Among these, sāttvika charity is supreme.
A Special Ideal for Bhagavad Dharma Followers: Daily Charity
For Bhagavad Dharmis, there is a beautiful ideal— to place a small amount of money every morning in a personal “charity box.”
Those who donate only once a month miss the spiritual benefit of daily merit, daily del purification. Thus, even a monthly amount should be divided into daily portions.
Setting Aside 10% of Monthly Income
A noble practice for Bhagavad Dharma followers is:
Set aside 10% of monthly income for charity.
5% for worthy recipients
5% for spreading the Bhagavad Gita
Why for the Gita? Because Bhagavan declares in verse 18:69:
“He who spreads the knowledge of the Gita among sincere seekers is exceedingly dear to Me; and no one will ever become dearer than him.”
Thus, distributing copies of the Gita and inspiring people to read it is among the highest forms of charity.
