🌺 How to Attain Freedom from Lust?

(A Sincere Seeker’s Cry and Scriptural Solution)

    Question:

Jai Shri Radhe, Guruji. My mind is trapped in lust. I feel constant mental tension. I try to chant God’s name, but I can’t focus. Two years ago, I fell in love with a married woman who has children. Even now, we occasionally talk over the phone, and I just can’t seem to forget her. The moment I sit for japa (chanting), her thoughts take over my mind. I’ve opened my heart to you. Please guide me. What should I do? 🙏

    🕉️ Answer (By Brahma Bodhi):

    Dear Soul,
Your question is deep and heartfelt. Please know that you are not alone — many are silently suffering from such emotional and mental entanglements in today’s age. The difference is: you are aware, and this very awareness is the first step toward liberation.

You have admitted the truth and are seeking a solution — this shows grace is already working in your life.

    📿 Surrender is the Solution

Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita:

daivī hyeṣā guṇamayī mama māyā duratyayā
māmeva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te
    (Gita 7.14)

👉 “This divine energy (Mata) of Mine, composed of the three gunas (sattva, rajas, and tamas), is very difficult to overcome.
But those who surrender unto Me alone can cross beyond it.

🔑 So the solution lies in total surrender to God (Sharanagati).
Your presence in this spiritual group and your questions are proof that divine grace has already begun to act in your life.

🔥 How to Rise Above Lust? Through Fear and Inspiration

There are two ways people give up sinful actions:

    1. Fear – when they clearly see the dangerous consequences of sin.
    2. Inspiration – when they pursue a higher spiritual goal with strong desire.

💔 Lust, especially when directed toward a married woman, is not only a cause of emotional unrest but is considered a grave sin from a spiritual perspective.

📖 A Story from the Mahabharata:

King Nahusha was a mighty and righteous king who once even attained the throne of Indra (king of the heavens). But he became lustful toward Indra’s wife, Shachi. Though she saved herself, the sinful desire itself caused his fall — and he was cursed to be born as a python in his next life.

Imagine — from a divine king to a snake, all due to lust.

👁️ Practical Tips to Control Lust:

    1. Avoid External Triggers

Stay away from lust-inducing media — videos, pictures, books, or even thoughts. They only fuel the fire.

    2. Study Scriptures Daily

Read the Ramayana, Gita, and Bhagavatam regularly.
Focus especially on the character of Lord Rama — so pure and uplifting, it will cleanse your heart over time.

    3. During Japa (Chanting)

Keep a picture of the Lord in front of you. Gaze at it as you chant.
When your mind wanders, bring your focus back to His image.

    4. When Lustful Thoughts Arise

Train your mind to see that woman as a Divine Mother — as Goddess Durga.
Many monks use this practice to avoid falling into desire.
Seeing the divine form in the one who tempts you destroys impure attraction.

🌼 Lust — When Aligned with Dharma, Is Also Divine

Lord Krishna also says in the Gita:

    dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu kāmo’smi bharatarṣabha
    (Gita 7.11)

👉 “I am the sexual desire (kāma) that is not opposed to dharma, O Arjuna.”

🔸 Righteous sexual union within marriage is sacred and natural.
🔸 But unrighteous sexual activity, such as with someone else’s spouse, is a great sin.

    📵 Immediate Practical Steps:

Stop all phone contact with that woman — even if you feel your feelings are “pure”.
✅ Redirect your mind through service (seva), chanting, and spiritual study.

    📌 Final Takeaways:

✅ Continue chanting the Lord’s name — even if your mind wanders.
✅ Over time, your mind will be purified, and lust will fade away.
✅ Remember: this is a process, and it requires patience and perseverance.
✅ With God’s grace and your personal effort, full liberation is absolutely possible.

    Question:
    Hari Sharanam!
Gurudev, could you kindly send a word-picture of Vaikuntha? 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

    Answer (Brahm Bodhi):

When Brahmaji performed deep penance, Lord Vishnu revealed to him the vision of His supreme abode—Vaikuntha. This realm is the highest of all worlds; beyond it there is nothing. It is free of sorrow, delusion, and fear. Time itself holds no sway here, nor can maya (illusion) touch it. The atmosphere is pure, saturated with unmixed sattva—untouched by passion (rajas) or darkness (tamas).

    The Realm of Pure Devotion

Vaikuntha is the dwelling place of the Lord’s exclusive devotees, those who are honored alike by gods and demons. Only love and reverence breathe here; nothing impure can enter.

    The Divine Inhabitants

The residents of Vaikuntha are wondrously beautiful. Some are dark-hued, others fair; their eyes resemble the petals of a lotus—calm and charming. Clad in yellow silks, their forms radiate sweetness. Each bears four arms, adorned with shining gems, ornaments, and crowns. Their bodies glow like coral, cat’s eye stones, or tender lotus stalks. Earrings glimmer, pearls shimmer, and their presence fills the realm with splendor.

Celestial chariots, radiant as lightning among clouds, glide across the skies. Divine maidens, filled with grace, enhance the beauty of the realm. The air is alive with light and music.

    Service of the Divine Mother

Here dwells Goddess Lakshmi herself, ever serving the Lord with countless forms. With her attendants, she sings and dances in joy, offering flowers from heavenly gardens at the Lord’s feet. Her presence fills Vaikuntha with auspiciousness and grace.

    The Supreme Lord of Vaikuntha

At the center, Brahma beheld Lord Vishnu—Master of the Satvatas, Consort of Lakshmi, Lord of Sacrifice, and Sovereign of the universe. Around Him stood His chief attendants—Sunanda, Nanda, Prabala, Arhana—ever alert in His service.

The Lord’s face glowed with compassion. His eyes, radiant with delight, bore a reddish hue of joy. He wore a golden crown and earrings, a garland of forest flowers, and the Shrivatsa mark upon His chest shone brilliantly. Clad in yellow silk, He was seated upon the most revered throne, surrounded by His eternal energies—sixteen principal and five secondary, all personified.

Abundant with opulence, both eternal and occasional, He resides there in joy—beyond decay, beyond end.

Brahma’s heart melted at this vision. His body trembled, tears of bliss filled his eyes, and he bowed low at the Lord’s lotus feet.

    The Path to Vaikuntha

The Bhagavata Purana gives us a further glimpse through the journey of Dhruva, the child devotee, who was carried to Vaikuntha on a divine chariot:

    As the chariot soared, the three worlds faded away;
even the brilliance of gods and sages seemed distant.
Above all realms, filled with peace and effulgence,
Vaikuntha shone with its own light—
not lit by sun or moon,
    but radiant in itself,
and through that light the entire creation was illumined.

Yet, this path is not open to all. It is barred to those whose hearts are hard, who harm others, or who remain bound in selfishness.

It opens only to those whose lives are steeped in virtue, whose minds are calm, who see all beings equally, and who delight in bringing joy to others. Above all, those who cherish the devotees of the Lord as their dearest companions and well-wishers—such souls alone become worthy of Vaikuntha.

Vaikuntha is not merely a place. It is a state of pure divine fellowship—an eternal home where the soul, free of fear and illusion, beholds the Lord forever.

To think of it is to long for it. To long for it is to begin walking toward it. 🌸

    Question:
    🙏 Om Hari Sharanam, Gurudev.
Amidst the many responsibilities of household life, I manage to devote half an hour or an hour to meditation, kriya, or worship. For turning away from external rituals and offering inwardly through the mind, visualization seems necessary. My question is—what is manas puja (mental worship), and how can it be practiced anywhere, at any time?
In meditation I chant ‘Om,’ and throughout the day I try to remember any name of God. Please guide me as to which mantra would be most suitable for me. 🙏

    Answer (Brahm Bodhi)

In your first sentence, an independent question is hidden: How can one carve out even half an hour or an hour for divine worship amid household duties?
Although you did not formally ask it, this is an important question for every householder. For 99.99% of people live within the household stage of life, surrounded by duties and relationships. In the light of the Gita, the answer is useful for all. Therefore, let me first speak about this, and afterwards I will discuss the practice of manas puja.

    The Dilemma of a Householder

I have seen great souls who never left their home, yet clearly told their family that they would no longer take part in minor tasks or festivities. Through proper dialogue, when the family members understood the higher purpose of an elder’s life, they gradually began to cooperate—if they saw the seriousness of the spiritual goal.

When children did not support, such seekers quietly went to a sacred place, absorbed themselves in remembrance of God, and from there departed for Vaikuntha.

But for one who has married and raised children, freedom from responsibility usually comes only after education, upbringing, and marriage of the children are complete. Yet, even then, many become absorbed in their grandchildren and thus waste the golden period of their life. Occasional love and conversation with grandchildren is natural, but when the mind becomes “absorbed” in them, it is binding. That new form of attachment draws one again into the cycle of birth and death.

    Two Paths for the Householder

Since you are a householder, fulfilling family duties and not yet aged, renunciation is not a natural option. In your case, two paths are most suitable:

    1. Fixing a Dedicated Time

Sit with your family and lovingly explain that you need one or two hours daily, completely undisturbed. Every person has the right to spend some time in peace for the higher purpose of life. After repeated dialogue, your family will surely agree. This time of silence need not be in the morning only—it may be any hour convenient to all.
Then, in that quiet space, you may practice meditation and mental worship. Make it clear that you can be approached only in case of emergency.

    2. Name-Chanting in the Remaining Hours

In the other 22 hours of the day, continue chanting God’s name inwardly. Nothing prevents this. The Gita itself declares: “Among sacrifices, I am the sacrifice of japa (chanting).”
Japa is a profound and simple discipline, open to all, at all times.

    3. Offering All Actions to God

Do not regard household work as mere compulsion. See it as God’s command, and dedicate it to Him. Just as ordinary food becomes prasad when offered to the Lord, so too any task, when consecrated to God, becomes sacred. The Gita clearly teaches—perform actions for the welfare of the world. Then even the simplest duties turn into divine worship.

    The Gita’s Path for Householders

Thus, the Gita prescribes these very means for householders—

    • Set aside fixed time for worship,
    • Fill the day with inward remembrance,
    • Consecrate daily work as service to God.

Through these, one may fulfill worldly responsibilities and yet move steadily toward liberation.

I shall discuss the method of manas puja or mental worship in my next post.

    Question:
Guruji, we—six brothers and sisters—have been holding a satsang program every Saturday evening from 7 to 8 through video call since 2021. In this satsang, we study and discuss the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita.

    Answer (Brahm Bodhi):
    Hari Sharanam!

First of all, my heartfelt blessings and good wishes to you and your brothers and sisters for engaging in satsang with such devotion. The glory of satsang is indeed profound—it uplifts not only those who practice it but also those who listen to it.

Now, coming to your question—why is it that the incarnations of God have taken place, and continue to take place, primarily in the land of Bharat? Strictly speaking, such a question should be asked of God Himself, for He is sovereign and independent. His divine will is beyond human questioning. His pastimes remain mysterious, and the full secret of them has never been revealed. Yet, from a historical and geographical perspective, some reflection is possible.

    The Unique Land of Bharat

Bharat has always stood apart from the rest of the world. Its geography is unparalleled—surrounded by oceans on three sides and protected by the Himalayas in the north, with only narrow gateways in the northwest and northeast. Within this land exists a great variety of climates, rarely found elsewhere.

In other parts of the world, human beings may have been born earlier, but for long they remained primitive and uncivilized. Civilization did not flourish there. For example, though anthropologists say the first human appeared in Africa, even today that continent is often considered backward and underdeveloped compared to Bharat. Geography has much to do with this, for geography deeply shapes history.

    Fertile Soil for Civilization

India’s geography was indeed a blessing. With its rivers flowing abundantly, its fertile plains, and its green richness, Bharat offered the perfect setting for agriculture and animal husbandry. These in turn gave rise to prosperity. And prosperity allowed human beings to rise above the daily struggle for mere survival. When food and safety are assured, the human mind turns naturally toward higher pursuits.

Thus, from very ancient times, the sages of Bharat—freed from constant material anxiety—devoted themselves to reflection, contemplation, and meditation on the soul, Brahman, and the eternal truths. This is why philosophy, spirituality, and culture found their deepest flowering here.

    The Birthplace of the Vedas

It was on the fertile banks of the Ganga and the region of the Sapta-Sindhu that the Vedas were composed. While Europe and other lands still lived as hunters and gatherers, Bharat had already begun to blossom into a civilization of profound spiritual depth. Here discussions of truth, non-violence, celibacy, honesty, morality, and the nature of God were alive and widespread.

    The Divine Soil of Incarnation

Cactus may grow in the desert, but soft and fragrant flowers bloom only in fertile, moist soil. In the same way, when God beheld the consciousness of the people of Bharat—nurtured by centuries of wisdom, softened by compassion, and made fertile by reflection—He chose this land for His divine manifestations.

Here, in this sacred soil, the ground was ready for the germination of divinity. Thus Bharat became the chosen stage where God incarnated, speaking directly with humanity and guiding mankind face-to-face.

🌸 Indeed, Bharat remains the eternal land of divine dialogue—the place where God chose to walk among us, so that humanity may know the way to truth and liberation.
