🌺 How to Attain Freedom from Lust?

(A Sincere Seeker’s Cry and Scriptural Solution)

Question:

Jai Shri Radhe, Guruji. My mind is trapped in lust. I feel constant mental tension. I try to chant God’s name, but I can’t focus. Two years ago, I fell in love with a married woman who has children. Even now, we occasionally talk over the phone, and I just can’t seem to forget her. The moment I sit for japa (chanting), her thoughts take over my mind. I’ve opened my heart to you. Please guide me. What should I do? 🙏

🕉️ Answer (By Brahma Bodhi):

Dear Soul,
Your question is deep and heartfelt. Please know that you are not alone — many are silently suffering from such emotional and mental entanglements in today’s age. The difference is: you are aware, and this very awareness is the first step toward liberation.

You have admitted the truth and are seeking a solution — this shows grace is already working in your life.

📿 Surrender is the Solution

Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita:

daivī hyeṣā guṇamayī mama māyā duratyayā
māmeva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te
(Gita 7.14)

👉 “This divine energy (Mata) of Mine, composed of the three gunas (sattva, rajas, and tamas), is very difficult to overcome.
But those who surrender unto Me alone can cross beyond it.

🔑 So the solution lies in total surrender to God (Sharanagati).
Your presence in this spiritual group and your questions are proof that divine grace has already begun to act in your life.

🔥 How to Rise Above Lust? Through Fear and Inspiration

There are two ways people give up sinful actions:

  1. Fear – when they clearly see the dangerous consequences of sin.
  2. Inspiration – when they pursue a higher spiritual goal with strong desire.

💔 Lust, especially when directed toward a married woman, is not only a cause of emotional unrest but is considered a grave sin from a spiritual perspective.

📖 A Story from the Mahabharata:

King Nahusha was a mighty and righteous king who once even attained the throne of Indra (king of the heavens). But he became lustful toward Indra’s wife, Shachi. Though she saved herself, the sinful desire itself caused his fall — and he was cursed to be born as a python in his next life.

Imagine — from a divine king to a snake, all due to lust.

👁️ Practical Tips to Control Lust:

1. Avoid External Triggers

Stay away from lust-inducing media — videos, pictures, books, or even thoughts. They only fuel the fire.

2. Study Scriptures Daily

Read the Ramayana, Gita, and Bhagavatam regularly.
Focus especially on the character of Lord Rama — so pure and uplifting, it will cleanse your heart over time.

3. During Japa (Chanting)

Keep a picture of the Lord in front of you. Gaze at it as you chant.
When your mind wanders, bring your focus back to His image.

4. When Lustful Thoughts Arise

Train your mind to see that woman as a Divine Mother — as Goddess Durga.
Many monks use this practice to avoid falling into desire.
Seeing the divine form in the one who tempts you destroys impure attraction.

🌼 Lust — When Aligned with Dharma, Is Also Divine

Lord Krishna also says in the Gita:

dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu kāmo’smi bharatarṣabha
(Gita 7.11)

👉 “I am the sexual desire (kāma) that is not opposed to dharma, O Arjuna.”

🔸 Righteous sexual union within marriage is sacred and natural.
🔸 But unrighteous sexual activity, such as with someone else’s spouse, is a great sin.

📵 Immediate Practical Steps:

Stop all phone contact with that woman — even if you feel your feelings are “pure”.
✅ Redirect your mind through service (seva), chanting, and spiritual study.

📌 Final Takeaways:

✅ Continue chanting the Lord’s name — even if your mind wanders.
✅ Over time, your mind will be purified, and lust will fade away.
✅ Remember: this is a process, and it requires patience and perseverance.
✅ With God’s grace and your personal effort, full liberation is absolutely possible.

🙏 Hari Sharanam

May you be blessed with strength, clarity, and divine love.
